    2010 - 07.31

The details of the wedding are being kept very secret. There are a few details that are relatively well-agreed on, though. Hillary Clinton will probably be wearing Oscar de la Renta and an updo. Chelsea Clinton can be wearing a Vera Wang wedding gown. The guest list involves friends of the family such as previous British prime ministers and Oprah.

How much the Clinton wedding will cost

The venue, which is a previous Astor Estate, will cost $ 400,000 to rent. The several-course catered dinner can be about $ 1,500 per person. Floral arrangements will cost $ 250,000 or so. A less glamorous price tag is the security — expected to run between a quarter and a half of a million dollars. Will the Clinton Wedding get criticized?

Conspicuous consumption accusations are being thrown at the Clinton wedding already. Some wonder if Marc Mazvinsky and Chelsea Clinton’s wedding is a reserved affair, or if they’re just showing off. The recent wedding between Carrie Underwood and Mike Fisher cost about half a million dollars. The expected wedding between Kate Middleton and Prince William is probably going to be in the $ 5 million range.

    A $ 45 Investment In Ansel Adams Negatives Returns $ 200 Million

    2010 - 07.31

If Ansel Adams were alive today he would probably be pleasantly surprised at this return on investment. It took him 10 years but he’s finally confident experts the pictures were taken by Ansel Adams, photographer. Now he’s poised to reap a crazy return on his $ 45 investment. All the photos are being appraised for more than $ 200 million now.

Photos from Ansel Adams in a garage sale

Black and White photos of the American West were what Ansel Adams, who died in 1984, was known for. California’s Yosemite National Park is where his most famous pictures were shot. CNN reports that Norsigian bought two boxes of glass negatives at a garage sale for $ 45 after dickering the price down from $ 70. Art expert Robert Moeller told CNN that after six months of study, he concluded “with a high degree of probability, the images under consideration were produced by Ansel Adams”.

Ansel Adams negatives considered the ‘missing link’

CNN was told by David W. Streets, appraiser and art dealer, that these photos found are a “missing link” within the life of the photographer. July 27, these photos were shown at the Beverly Hills gallery. He estimates that that Norsigian’s return on his investment could effortlessly be worth up to $ 200 million. Evidently 65 glass negatives made it out of the 1937 darkroom fire that destroyed 5,000 different plates in it.

Ansel Adams started a Zone System

Silver tarnishing on the Ansel Adams garage sale photographs show they were taken between 1919 and the early 1930s, well before Ansel Adams’ Yosemite images became nationally acknowledged within the 1940s. Special cameras were used by Adams to create very sharp pictures.

The blog, Croanca, wonders if the dealers within the CNN article are actually qualified to say this is Ansel Adams photos. Some are concerned about the reproduction of the Ansel Adams plates. Wikileaks Documents Paint A Grim Picture Of The Afghanistan War

    2010 - 07.31

92,000 classified documents with sensitive info on the Afghanistan war were leaked by Wikileaks, the news website created by Julian Assange. These documents were given by Wikileaks to the Times, the Guardian, and Der Spiegel, 3 of the largest newspapers within the world. July 25 was when reports were given by the newspapers on the details received. The Wikileaks documents provide new insight on how the Taliban insurgency is gaining strength, civilians are being killed in the crossfire, and Pakistan intelligence operatives are accepting American cash in one hand and aiding and abetting the Taliban to kill American soldiers with the other.

    Newspapers receive Wikileaks documents

Wikileaks documents were had details in them that is used to create war strategy by desk officers and troops within the field. Before publishing stories that used details within the documents the New York Times and also the Guardian wrote commentary saying they had taken care not to publish info that would harm national security interests. Gen. James Jones, the U.S. National Security Advisor, explains:

“The United States strongly condemns the disclosure of classified info by individuals and organizations which could put the lives of Americans and our partners at risk, and threaten our national security.”

    Pakistan intelligence helps Taliban kill?

Of the numerous stories in the New York Times depending on the Wikileaks documents, one reports about documents describing how Pakistani intelligence works with Al Qaeda to plan attacks. Although experts said directly linking the Pakistani spy agency with Al Qaeda is difficult, the documents contain firsthand accounts of American anger at Pakistan’s unwillingness to confront insurgents who launched attacks near Pakistani border posts, moved openly by the truckload across the frontier, and retreated to Pakistani territory for safety.

Truth of Afghanistan war doesn’t look good

In a series of articles, the Times, the Guardian and Der Spiegel articles paint a picture of the Afghanistan war that is much worse than the spin put out by the U.S. government. Any progress is limited by a corrupt Afghan government and police force, a disloyal Afghan army and an uncooperative Pakistani military that is aiding and abetting the Taliban insurgency. Many people just needed these documents from Wikileaks to show them everything they already knew. Despite the fact that congress and the public are being told otherwise, the Wikileaks documents show that the Afghanistan war has Americans getting in deeper and deeper.

    Wikileaks suspected of espionage

Wikileaks supposedly had info given to them by the soldier, Private Bradley Manning, and was criticized by the hacker who turned Manning in. Adrian Lamo wanted to stop the reports from getting to the public so he turned in Manning, reports ABC News. Lamo thinks Manning had help considering all the information released. Lamo thinks Julian Assange hired Manning as “a personal shopper for classified data.”

Tony Hayward No Longer CEO But BP Career Continues In Russia

    2010 - 07.31

Following a meeting in London to decide his fate, Tony Hayward was expected to resign Monday. Instead, he’s being shuffled off to Russia, where he will direct BP’s role in TNK-BP, a joint venture considered one of BP’s plum projects . Hayward may appear to be escaping culpability for leading a wreck less company that caused the oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico 2010, and then botching the oil spill response. But some senators who think he had a hand in a BP-Libya oil deal that led to the release of a convicted terrorist want to grill him before he flies to Moscow.

How ironic: Tony Hayward’s Russian sojourn

Tony Hayward will step down as BPs CEO in October. His likely replacement is Robert Dudley, as outlined by the Associated Press. Dudley is the man who changed Hayward as BP’s director of the oil spill response. Hayward will now hold up BP’s end on the board on the Russian joint venture TNK-BP. The belief that Dudley, who once held the seat Hayward is about to warm, had to flee Russia in 2008 adds a bit of irony.

Will Hayward fare better at TK-BP than Dudley?

BP thinks more of Tony Hayward than most American’s and American politicians, if his new role swimming with Russian oil sharks is any indication. The TNK-BP venture, as outlined by the Washington Post, is one BP’s most important projects—with 25 percent of its total production. But BP’s Russian post can be a problem, as Robert Dudley’s experience shows. Dudley was forced to leave Russia after a fight with Russian shareholders.

Senators think Hayward bargained terrorists for oil

Americas Senators Bob Menendez and Kirsten Gillibrand want to haul Tony Hayward before Congress, perhaps though he is stepping down. The senators will hold a hearing July 29 on the release of the Lockerbie bomber and the New York Observer reports that they want to ask Hayward a couple of questions. The senators have been pushing British officials for weeks to conduct a full investigation of the links between a BP-Libya oil deal and also the release of Lockerbie bomber Abdul Baset al-Megrahi. Menendez said he believed Hayward was in the middle of negotiations with the Libyans during the oil deal.

First Generation Nap Nanny Products Recalled By CPSC

    2010 - 07.31

First generation Nap Nanny products have been recalled by Baby Matters and the Consumer Product Safety Commission. The product was getting used incorrectly during the one death that has been attributed to the product. Everyone who has a first generation Nap Nanny can get $80 off the purchase of a second generation product. Post resource – First Generation Nap Nanny products recalled by CPSC by Newystype.com.

    The Baby Matters Nap Nanny

The Baby Matters Nap Nanny is a foam product intended to help restless and fussy babies sleep. Intended to re-create the position of a automobile seat, the Nap Nanny has a three-point harness. When the harness is used incorrectly, it doesn’t hold the baby in place. D-rings don’t hold the Velcro harness in place in first generation products. The recall is only for the first generation products, though you will find concerns with second-generation products as well.

Reacting to the Nap Nanny recall

Which product you have requires your response to the Nap Nanny recall. Between January 2009 and July 2010, the Nap Nanny first generation product was sold in many stores. Call the Baby Matters company at 888-240-4282 to get a coupon for $ 80 (about 61 percent of the purchase price) off a new Nap Nanny. If your Nap Nanny has D-rings, you need to look at the video on the Baby Matters website before using it again.

Questions about the Consumer Product Safety Commission

The Nap Nanny recall is just one of the most recent in a huge number of baby product recalls. In the last year, the CPSC has recalled pacifiers, drop-side cribs, toys, booster seats, cradles and more. In 2008, Congress specifically required the CPSC to create standards for baby gear. Creating standards has been a long process, and only baby walkers and bath seats have complete standards. There are forthcoming standards for cribs, and you will find plans for other products. Despite the huge responsibility of the safety of most products, the CPSC has little funding or staffing.

The Hawaiian Islands Homeless Problem That Won’t Go Away

    2010 - 07.31

Tourism and military jobs are the most essential things to the Hawaiian Islands economy. About $200 a day is spent, according to NPR, by tourists for hotels, meals, and entertainments. Only $3 a day is spent by the homeless for room, board, and full health coverage within the Hawaiian Islands. Public food lines help feed locals experiencing dire straits, but the vast majority of individuals waiting for meals aren’t even from the Hawaiian Islands.

More bums living on Hawaiian Islands

There has been a 10 percent increase in shelter populations within the last year. Not only that, writes NPR, but 1,300 of those homeless in Hawaii each year come from out of state. Plastic and Aluminum can be redeemed for 5 cents in Hawaii which is what brings more people in to the state. $40 a day is made by Gary Phillips in Hawaii instead of the little amount he made in San Diego previously. The state will give people like Phillips free health care, $200 a month in food stamps, and let them sleep at the $3 shelter that gives three meals. Usually they don’t need any other money.

Perfect to visit when homeless or vacationing

The spending budget deficit within the Hawaiian Islands is $1.2 billion, and the state is trying to use Medicaid and tax refunds to help with that. Considering that homeless shelters within the Hawaiian Islands typically take millions of taxpayer dollars to operate, the influx of mainlanders comes at a most inopportune time. Connie Mitchell who is a director of one of these homeless shelters explains that about a 3rd of her spending budget goes to these new arrivals, reports NPR. Mitchell thinks numerous of these people have decided to become homeless just so they can live in Hawaii practically free.

    Honolulu and also the homeless

The University of Hawaii’s Center on the Family reports that there was a leap from 21 percent in 2005 to 43 percent in 2010 of Caucasians that are homeless in Hawaii. They’re mostly single and middle-aged. Many scrape together plane fare and live on the Hawaiian taxpayer’s dime while working odd jobs for a time. As the Hawaiian authorities start to catch on to the resource dilemma, the Hawaiian Islands homeless people will largely move on. Determining whether someone is living off public funds because of laziness or real misfortune – and dealing with each group appropriately – is a problem Hawaii’s government needs to solve. People who truly need pay day should be the focus of aid programs, rather than possible freeloaders exploiting the welfare system. UPDATE- The mainland has received homeless back since Hawaii is flying them back. New York has decided to fly them BACK to Hawaii.

Khmer Rouge Executioner Nets Only 19 Years Behind Bars For Genocide

    2010 - 07.31

Over 30 years after the fall of the brutal Khmer Rouge regime, one of the Khmer Rouge trials has just ended. Notorious hatchet man for the regime, Kang Kek Iew or Kaing Guek Eav, or “Comrade Duch,” was captured in 1999 and put on trial before a Cambodian tribunal. The trial of the man who presided over more than 17,000 executions has concluded. He was credited for time served, and sentenced to 19 years. The light sentence incensed the survivors and families of victims. Resource for this article – Former Khmer Rouge executioner gets 19 years for genocide by Personal Money Store.

Khmer Rouge warden saw thousands dead

The Khmer Rouge regime came to power in 1975. The goal of leader Pol Pot and the Khmer Rouge was to liquidate the upper and middle class, and found a collectivist farming utopia. The first to be sentenced to die were the educated, teachers, and perhaps wearing glasses carried a death sentence for appearing to be haughty and bookish. Kaing Guek Eav was the head of security for the Santebal, the state police, and was put in charge of Tuol Sleng prison, or S-21. Tuol Sleng received over 17,000 prisoners for torture and execution. Only 12 survived a trip to Toul Sleng.

    Capture and the trial

Many Khmer Rouge personnel scattered following the regime was toppled in 1979. Pol Pot went into hiding, eventually being found and put under house arrest until his death in 1998. Other officials of the Khmer Rouge went on trial, and some nevertheless are. Kaing Guek Eav was found going under a pseudonym near the Cambodia-Thailand border, surrendering to authorities in 1999. A long trial process started with the Khmer Rouge tribunals. Convicted of crimes against humanity, he was sentenced on July 26, 2010, to 35 years in prison with 16 years credited for pre-trial detention and time served. As outlined by the Christian Science Monitor, he will only serve 19 years behind bars.

    No holiday in Cambodia

People who lived under the Khmer Rouge are appalled at the sentence, according to the BBC. He may live until his release, and millions died under the Khmer Rouge. Chum Mey, one of the three still living survivors of Tuol Sleng was present at the trial. The Khmer Rouge murdered his wife and children. He said “millions of individuals died, a lot of cash has been spent on the court – and also the perpetrator is free (in 19 years)? I am not happy with that.”

Beatrice, Nebraska, Giving Away Land To Generate Revenue

    2010 - 07.31

Free land will always be a draw. At least that’s the theory. People have come to Beatrice, Neb., since 1862, when the Homestead Act first parceled out land to pioneer farmers. That was during very different economic times for America. Today, town officials have drawn up their own Homestead Act of 2010 within the hopes that giving away basically free land will generate real estate tax revenues to bolster the town’s cash reserves. Recurring property tax is something Beatrice needs more than more baseball fields and parks, reports the New York Times.

It is what the small towns are doing

The spectre of spending budget deficit haunts more of small town America than ever, as outlined by the Times. If a traditionally well-off small town like Boca Raton is hurting, you know things are bad. Such small towns are giving away land for a nominal fee or quite possibly free of charge, hoping that will bolster the city tax register and remove the burden of lawn maintenance from the town and place it upon the shoulders of private owners. Having more people in town will inevitable increase the town’s cost to provide services, but the property tax may be more than enough for making up that gap and then some.

Would a round of taxes for non-profits be within the offing?

Places like Manchester, N.H., and Concord, Mass., are wondering whether all non-profits should be exempt from taxes. The budget shortfall has to be made up in some way. The costs Concord could make up if even a portion of the 15 percent of their total real estate that is tax free changed sides would be tremendous. Will the time come for tax-exempt organizations to serve their communities via tax contribution? Schools, churches and other groups that traditionally evaded taxes may be forced to comply by the nation’s current economic reality. The need in small towns clearly exists, and the New York Times isn’t really the only publication to notice this.

    Beatrice, where homesteaders rise again

Where the homestead started is where it shall return. The National League of Cities predicts a dire tax shortfall for America, so possibly a return to homesteading is needed for financial purposes. According to that organization, “Between now and 2012, America’s cities are likely to experience shortfalls totaling $ 55 billion to $ 85 billion”. Such shortages will demand action. Bringing new homesteaders to Beatrice, Neb., and other small towns would likely mean new and improved homes, which benefit the values in existing neighborhoods nearby.

A simple solution to a simple need

Critics of the Homestead Act of 2010 and similar ventures elsewhere question whether it should be within a city’s power to dole out public land to “any non-taxpaying outsider who asks”. “What is the value of a lot to us if it’s empty?” is what one concerned town mayor asked the Times during their report When the reality is harsh, a simple and direct solution – a la Occam’s razor – is typically best.
